OSHA Portable Fire Extinguishers Standard
In the event of a workplace fire and in determining your decision to use a portable fire extinguisher, it is critical to be able to recognize what stage the fire is in. This will determine either the use of a fire extinguisher or a response for immediate evacuation. An incipient stage fire is defined as a fire in its initial or beginning stage that can be controlled or extinguished using a fire extinguisher. It is also critical to know which type of fire you may be attempting to extinguish in conjunction with the type of fire extinguisher that’s available in your work space. Using an incorrect fire extinguisher may result in the following workplace hazards, including but not limited to: rapid spread of the fire; increased flame size; explosions; reignition of flames; and electrocution.
Our portable fire extinguishers training program provides the required annual classroom and hands-on training and will address:
- what makes a fire;
- ignition sources and major fire hazards;
- classes of fires;
- fire stages;
- hazards involved with incipient-stage firefighting;
- types of fire extinguishers;
- extinguishing techniques: P.A.S.S. method (hands-on); and
- inspection, maintenance, and storage of fire extinguishers.
Our hands-on training is achieved by using a fire extinguishing simulator, which provides a realistic fire situation while eliminating the hazards involved with live burns. This training can occur inside the workplace or in an office setting while still providing a real-life feel for how to use an actual fire extinguisher.
